Interior Design student Grace See Shan won the Honorary Mention and Best Colour Choice Award in the AYDA AWARDS 2025. The Award ceremony took place on the 17^th Dec 2025 at Hilton Hotel, Petaling Jaya, organized by Nippon Paint.

Grace won the award for her project titled, “Kuala Sepetang Community & Visitor Centre” based on the give theme for this year, CONVERGENCE: Crafting Cultural Legacies. Grace’s project was selected for the award among the top 11 finalists out of 500 over entries submitted under the Interior Design category. ​It is vital to inform that Grace’s entry for the competition was the only Diploma program final year project among all the other finalists who submitted their Degree program major project. It was a tough fight for MIA. ​

She was awarded a trophy, certificate, cash prize of RM 500 for being the finalist, RM2500 for Honorary Mention Award plus RM 1000 for Best Colour Choice.

MIA Interior Design students won multiple awards in various competitions during the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) Interior Design Students’ Saturday 2025 event. Following are the competitions participated and awards won:

Legacy Parade Competition: Team MIA (SILVER)

BIG BATH, a company producing sanitary ware, organized a Mood-board design competition for students, in conjunction with ARCHIDEX 2025 event. The theme for this year was titled ‘Fashioned to Flow’.

Mood boards designed by Tan Zhong Hao and Grace See Shan from semester 6 were selected as top winners, under the modern earthy category and received cash and certificate.

Both their selected mood-boards were featured at the BIG BATH booth at the KL Convention Centre, during ARCHIDEX 2025.

Interior Design student, Cassandra Menon A/P Stephen Menon from semester 6, won the 2^nd Prize in the SPOTLIGHT 2025 Art competition, organized by Penang Art District.

The exhibition and award ceremony was held at MassHaus Gallery on Victoria street, George Town on the 13th Dec 2025.

Mr Lee Khai, Chairman of the Penang State Art Gallery and Head Judge for Spotlight 2025 announced the winner and awarded the prizes. Cassandra won RM 1000, Trophy & Certificate for her achievement.

A furniture piece titled ‘The WAVE’ sofa by Clarice Lee Yen Min from semester 4 was selected as one of the 10 finalists in the Malaysian International Furniture Fair 2025 (MIFF 2025) furniture design competition, with the theme “Furniture Meets Fashion”. Her work was displayed at MITEC Kuala Lumpur during the furniture fair in March 2025.

Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) proudly celebrates the achievement of Chan Hui Jin, a Diploma in Graphic Design student, who was awarded Runner-Up in the Multi-Piece Campaign Category at the Fujifilm Global Innovation Print Awards (IPA) 2025.

Chan Hui Jin stood out as the only student winner among 170 entries from 14 countries and regions, with only 36 winning entries selected globally. Her work demonstrated exceptional creativity, technical precision, and design innovation — qualities that deeply impressed the international judging panel.

Now in its 18th edition and second year as a global competition, the Fujifilm Innovation Print Awards attracted submissions from across Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United States, Germany, and other participating countries. The competition continues to celebrate the versatility and innovation enabled by FUJIFILM Business Innovation’s advanced toner and inkjet technologies, showcasing excellence across categories such as Books, Packaging, and Creative Design.

This participation was made possible through the generous support of Vivar Printing Sdn. Bhd., who provided professional printing for the entries, and RJ Paper Malaysia, who sponsored the premium paper materials used in the submission. Their collaboration exemplifies the strong industry-academia partnership that nurtures future-ready creative professionals.

This achievement marks another milestone for MIA’s Department of Visual Communication, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to nurturing creative talents who can excel on both national and international platforms.

Under the Young Expression category of the KL Park Festival 2025, held from 16–26 October, Ms. Haw Lee Chin led three students — Yoong Win Khit, Koi Jia Xuan, and Liou Xin Yee — from the Department of Visual Communication (DVC) to represent Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) in the Framewalk Design Contest.

From sign-up to ideation, execution, and final presentation, the team completed their project in less than two weeks, demonstrating exceptional creativity, teamwork, and adaptability. Despite facing an unexpected challenge when a thunderstorm damaged their installation, the students showed remarkable resilience and problem-solving skills by repairing and restoring their work on site.

Their dedication and perseverance paid off — the MIA team proudly won the 3rd Prize, a recognition that celebrates their creativity, determination, and professionalism under real-world conditions.

This achievement not only highlights the innovative spirit and commitment of MIA’s Visual Communication students but also reinforces the institution’s mission to empower young creatives to transform ideas into impactful experiences within the public and community art landscape.

The Department of Visual Communication (DVC) from the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) proudly celebrates the achievement of Team “Kuat Bising Pasar”, comprising graphic design students Ong Chun Yi, Khoo Jia Yu, and Shreyans Singh, who were selected as finalists in the Kuala Lumpur Design Festival (KLDF) 2025.

Showcased at DC Mall from 16–26 October 2025, the team’s installation brought the lively essence of Malaysia’s pasar pagi (morning markets) and pasar malam (night markets) to life — turning these familiar community spaces into an artsy playground of colours, sounds, and stories from everyday Malaysian life.

Through their creative interpretation, the students transformed the nostalgic charm and bustling energy of local markets into a multi-sensory experience that celebrated cultural diversity, craftsmanship, and connection. Their concept reflected how design can bridge tradition and modern expression, reminding visitors that inspiration often begins in the simplest corners of daily life.

Guided and assisted by the DVC academic team, the students demonstrated strong teamwork, creativity, and adaptability throughout the competition. Their participation in the Kuala Lumpur Design Festival offered them a meaningful opportunity to engage with real-world design challenges, collaborate under time pressure, and showcase their vision to a wider audience of industry professionals and the public.

This valuable competition experience adds vibrant colours to their learning journey, inspiring them to see design beyond the classroom — not just as a discipline, but as a way of observing, interpreting, and enriching the human experience through creativity and storytelling.

Congratulations to our current music student, Ms Yap Wen Shan for achieving Gold Award in the competition at Blüthner-Internationales Festival der Musik 2025 held on 6th June!

Mr. Tioh Wen Li, one of our current music students, has been selected as a singer for the World Youth Choir 2025 — the only Malaysian to be chosen this year!

He will join the training camp and embark on a performance tour across several European countries this July.
